Foundation first
More visibility isn't the answer. At least not yet.
Chances are, you have a visibility problem.
As expert founders and solo practice owners, we all want to raise our professional profile so we can have greater impact and create opportunities, commercial or otherwise.
But more visibility isn’t the answer, at least not yet. Not by itself anyway.
Many credible experts and leaders try to fix the problem by turning up the volume. This means more posts on social media. More hustling within our networks. More personal brand communications activity, online and off - speaking gigs, podcast interviews, YouTube videos etc.
Lots of work, but little to show for it.
Chasing visibility without foundation has consequences: drowning in a sea of sameness, mixed messaging, and marketplace confusion.
The more you amplify without a clear foundation, the more you blend in - lots of content, but no differentiation, visible but indistinct. Cover too much ground, jump on trends, publish without a clear point of view, and your signals become inconsistent.
Ultimately, the market ends up not knowing what to make of you.
What actually transforms your expert or leadership brand is getting the sequence right. I call it the ARC.
A = Assurance 👉 The foundation. Getting crystal clear on what you stand for, what makes your perspective distinct, and why your voice matters.
R = Recognition 👉 With Assurance in place, you build a sustainable authority program - strategic, content-led, consistent - that earns you genuine recognition in the marketplace.
C = Capital 👉 When Recognition compounds over time, opportunities follow:
Intellectual capital that establishes you as the authority in your space.
Social capital that expands your network with the right people.
Reputational capital that opens doors you didn’t even know existed.
Commercial capital that attracts real opportunities: business growth, strategic collaborations, paid advisory gigs.
Capital is the outcome, not the starting point.
Get the foundations right. Build recognition the right way. Then focus on reaping the rewards of the profile and reputation you’ve built.
Onwards!
